What is Pantolactone?

A small molecule closely related to panthenol (pro-vitamin B5): it is one of the building blocks used to make panthenol, and often appears alongside it on labels. On its own it works as a humectant, helping the skin hold on to water. It is not the same as panthenol and has far less research behind it, but it is considered gentle.
